Obesity clinics
Obesity has become a major problem in the western world in recent times and the problem is set to rise. Obesity is affecting both adults and children thanks to changes in eating habits and lack of exercise.
For some people it can be a terrible condition that they cannot get rid of naturally. Some people have tried everything to lose weight but to no avail and they must then turn to obesity clinics to try a last ditch attempt to lose weight. That last resort is normally weight loss surgery. There are many weight loss clinics around the UK that are offering weight loss procedures to help those who cannot get rid of their excess weight.
Obesity clinics are there to help those with morbid obesity to lose weight. There are many procedures that they offer including gastric bypass, gastric band and gastric balloon. A lot of these obesity clinics are privately run and offer comprehensive support and care to the patient with outstanding medical surgeons on hand to carry out the procedures. You will find that most obesity clinics have specialists in each type of procedure to ensure you are getting the best possible care and attention.
The gastric band works by reducing the size of the stomach, thus reducing the amount of food which the patient can eat. It is the most common weight loss procedure in Europe. The surgeon will place a band around the stomach to separate the stomach into two unequal parts. The smaller part will now work as the main stomach.
This drastically reduces the amount of food which can be consumed by the patient resulting in weight loss. It is the least invasive type of weight loss surgery which is carried out by obesity clinics and is therefore the most popular.
Obesity clinics also carry out the gastric balloon procedure which involves a deflated silicone balloon being inserted into the stomach and then inflated. This fools the stomach into feeling full which results in the patient eating less. It is mainly used in patients who do not fulfil the criteria for other forms of weight loss surgery or for those patients who are so overweight that they have to lose some weight before undergoing other procedures. It is non invasive and can help obesity clinics to determine a patient’s suitability for weight loss surgery.
Another form of weight loss surgery which is carried out in obesity clinics is the gastric bypass. This involves splitting the stomach in two with the use of a band but the smaller part of the stomach is then re-routed to the end of the small intestines resulting in the body having less time to digest food.
Obesity clinics not only carry out these types of weight loss surgical procedures but they also provide excellent patient aftercare. A nurse, dietician and fitness advisor will usually be on hand to work with the patient to make sure they are getting the maximum benefit from their surgery.
