Post weight loss surgery
For those who are morbidly obese, losing weight can become an obsession and they will try various ways to lose weight, even resorting to weight loss surgery. This can have a dramatic impact on their weight in a short space of time but this is not without its problems.
Losing such a large amount of weight in a relatively short space of time can leave the body showing signs that it was once extremely overweight. Although the fat has gone, there will still be proof underneath the clothes and this can lead to more unhappiness and psychological issues for the patient. The answer to this can be post weight loss surgery.
If a patient loses a substantial amount of weight quickly, they may be left with loose overhanging skin. The skin which has been stretched to such a level cannot revert back to its original shape that quickly and it will lose its elasticity meaning that this skin is left hanging loose where the fat once was. So instead of the patient feeling happy that they have lost this significant amount of weight, they now have a new problem with their body image and this can be more damaging than being overweight. Not only does this excess skin look unsightly but it can cause hygiene problems too. For this reason, many patients who have undergone weight loss surgery will then resort to cosmetic surgical procedures to help them to get rid of the evidence that they were once so overweight.
One of the main problem areas is the stomach. Here is where there will usually be a large amount of excess skin hanging down which can cause hygiene problems. Because the extra skin here will usually fold over itself, it can lead to an accumulation of moisture between the folds. This can result in a condition called Intertriginous Dermatitis which causes the skin around the folds to become inflamed from constant rubbing. If this is not treated, the skin will bleed and flake and can be prone to infection. The only way to non surgically treat this is to wear loose clothes and keep the area constantly dry and this is not ideal for someone who has lost so much weight and wants to show it off. A Tummy Tuck can get rid of this excess skin so that the patient can flaunt their new shapelier body.
The abdominal wall muscles which have become looser because of the excess weight will be manually tightened by a surgeon during a tummy tuck operation. Once this is done, he will then cut away the excess skin and sew the patient back up. The scars can be hidden most times by the surgeon so that they do not show. This can help the patient to now begin to be proud of their bodies again and more confident in showing them off.
Post weight loss surgery may be a necessary follow on procedure for people who have lost a large amount of weight but it can give back the confidence that has been missing for so long!
